Description
Uniden R8 Radar Detector NZ (R8nz)
The Uniden R8 radar detector NZ buyers choose is backed by a local Auckland-based authorised distributor—unlike grey market alternatives that leave you without warranty support, any clue how to update it, or even any idea how to install it.
The Uniden R8 is the clear choice over the Valentine V1 when it comes to arrow-loaded radar detectors in New Zealand. With full legal compliance, a robust feature set, and support from a local distributor, the Uniden R8 is the superior option for Kiwi drivers.
Unlike the Valentine V1 which lacks agency or warranty support in New Zealand, the Uniden R8 is backed by an Auckland-based authorised distributor. This means you can purchase with confidence, knowing you'll receive reliable service and parts availability if needed.
The Uniden R8 also outperforms the Valentine V1 in core functionality. It includes a built-in GPS database, Bluetooth connectivity for third-party app integration, and a colour display – features the Valentine V1 simply can't match. And with its advanced long-range detection capabilities, the Uniden R8 will keep you informed and protected on the road.
- Long-range detection
- GPS database
- Static speed camera location alerts
- Average Speed Camera location alerts
- Bus lane (monitored) location alerts
- Bluetooth for pairing with third-party apps
- Firmware and GPS database updateable via USB
When it comes to radar detectors with those directional arrows, the choice is clear. Opt for the feature-rich, locally supported Uniden R8nz over the Valentine V1 for the best performance and peace of mind.
Why NZ Buyers Choose the Uniden R8 Radar Detector — Our Zero-False Settings
Before we send it out to our customers, we open every box and adjust the settings to eliminate false alerts. Using the factory settings, you will get alerted about things that don't matter – Advanced Driver Assistance Systems (ADAS) in other cars, motion-sensing automated doors, road paint, clouds, and other annoying false alert favourites. With our settings, you will learn to trust the beeps. You don't need to think about it if it makes a sound. Adjust your speed if required, think later.
What's in the Box?
- Our exclusive zero-false settings Uniden R8 radar detector
- 12v cigarette socket with USB charge port and mute button
- Dual window bracket options

Common Uniden R8 Radar Detector NZ Questions
Is the R8nz legal in New Zealand?
Yes, radar detectors are 100% legal in New Zealand.
How do I update the Uniden R8 firmware and GPS database?
You can send it back to us, we're happy to look after that for you. Alternatively, if you're comfortable going DIY, you can find the update tool, firmware and latest GPS database at the Uniden distributor's site here: Blulink Uniden updates.
Does the R8 NZ get speed cameras?
Yes and no. With K band enabled, yes, the R8 is capable of getting mobile speed cameras (the new NZTA SUVs and trailers). However various testers suggest it is very "late" on most legitimate camera threats, plus it WILL get false alerts. It's easy enough to enable/disable the k-band frequency in the menu, which will turn mobile camera alerts (and false alerts) on or off.
Fixed or static speed cameras, and average speed cameras (section speed control) work off a GPS database. Keep your database up to date and your Uniden R8nz will tell you about those "safety" cameras before you get to them.
How does the Uniden R8 Radar Detector NZ compare to the Valentine V1?
The R8nz is part of an international design and can be adjusted at a software/firmware level depending on where in the world it is sold. By comparison, the V1 is made for North America and there's no support, warranty, parts or service outside of the USA.
Compared to the R8nz, here's what the V1 does NOT have:
- Local NZ warranty
- Voice alerts (just beeps)
- Firmware updates
- GPS
- Local parts or accessories
- NZ repair agent
- Official sales channel in NZ
